IGEB Outreach Activities

This page describes some of the many outreach activities undertaken by the Interagency GPS Executive Board (IGEB), the predecessor to the National Space-Based PNT Executive Committee, during the 1997-2004 time period.

IEEE PLANS Conference

In April 2004, the following presentations were delivered at the IEEE Position, Location, and Navigation Symposium (PLANS) in Monterey, CA.

The trade fair featured numerous educational exhibits from a diverse range of government and industry users and providers, plus brief remarks by IGEB Co-Chair Gene Conti and U.S. GPS Industry Council President Charlie Trimble. Several members of Congress, including Senators Ted Stevens and Patrick Leahy, paid visits to the show.

U.S. GPS Outreach Display

NASA, FAA, the U.S. GPS Industry Council, and the Air Transport Association cooperated to develop this large multimedia exhibit explaining the applications of GPS in a variety of industries and geographic regions. The intent of the booth is to educate officials from around the world on the importance of GPS to their own constituents. The display has been exhibited at nine major international venues, including the recent World Radiocommunication Conference 2000 (WRC-2000), where it played a key role in ensuring protection of the current and future GPS spectrum allocations. It was also the centerpiece for the congressional outreach event on Capitol Hill.

Civil GPS Brochure

The Department of Transportation developed this brochure with inputs from the IGEB agencies. It describes GPS and its augmentation systems in simple terms and from a civilian user perspective. The brochure has been distributed publicly and sent to every member of Congress.

DOT Letter to Congress

IGEB Co-Chair Eugene Conti, Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy, issued this letter to all 535 members of Congress plus a number of key committee staff members. The letter requests support for modernization of GPS and its augmentations in the President's Fiscal Year 2001 budget request.

DOC Educational Briefings

The Department of Commerce presented these briefings to its congressional oversight committees to educate them on the basics of GPS and GPS modernization.
